Saint Peter’s Church
619 Lexington Avenue New York, NY 10022
Known as the “First Church of Jazz,” Saint Peter’s Church is an iconic Lutheran congregation in Midtown Manhattan. Renowned for its modernist architecture, it sits at the intersection of jazz, contemporary art, and social justice, hosting world-famous Jazz Vespers every Sunday since 1965 while serving the city as a sanctuary congregation and community hub.
The problem
The Keywas Saint Peter’s Church’s quarterly community journal, published from the 1960s until it eventually went out of print. Over the decades, it documented the life of the church and its wider community. In the 1970s, the publication was redesigned by Massimo Vignelli and Henry Altchek, establishing the iconic visual identity that became closely associated with Saint Peter’s.
How we solved it
In 2025, we revisited The Key by deeply engaging with its historic visual identity and editorial legacy. We co-developed a clear production workflow, supported content collection efforts, and conducted interviews to help shape each issue’s narrative and direction.
Today, The Key continues both in print — preserving the Vignelli design legacy — and in digital formats that expand accessibility through additional content and multilingual translations.
